The Office of Personnel Management has decided to open federal offices in the
Washington, D.C. area on a normal schedule. It also is giving federal employees the option of unscheduled telework or leave if necessary.

The Baltimore Federal Executive Board is recommending offices in that region open under a two-hour delay with unscheduled telework or leave for federal employees.

OPM’s decision comes after a week of delayed openings or closed offices in the D.C. area after a snow storm dumped as much as 30 inches of snow across the region.

The Metropolitan Council of Governments, which includes about 200 members across the region, has been holding a conference call all week to discuss the latest with the roads, mass transit, schools and other public sector services.

With temperatures well above freezing during the day, state and local transportation agencies made progress clearing snow from the roads. WTOP, Federal News Radio’s sister station, reported  while streets are far from normal, most are passable.

Metro and commuter train service returned to normal on Thursday, though Metro says buses were running under a “light” snow schedule and trains were arriving at stations outside the city every eight minutes and inside the city every four minutes.

The morning and afternoon commutes still have been slow and troublesome, and with temperatures expected to drop below freezing Thursday night into Friday morning, the streets and sidewalks could turn icy.

Tell us what you think of how OPM handled the status updates this week in dealing with the snow storm and its aftermath.
