My HealtheVet – Keeping the Promise – Access

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) expands My HealtheVet and Blue Button to open access to clinical notes.

VA grants easier access to patient information so that Veteran patients can better partner with their health care teams and make informed decisions about their health. Not only do patients have the ability to access clinical notes from their VA electronic health record, they can also view, download and print results of imaging and laboratory test results – now just three days after notes and reports are completed – through My HealtheVet. And on Veterans Day 2013, VA will celebrate 10 years of online access for Veterans via My HealtheVet. To recognize that milestone, we’d like for all Veterans to go online by Veterans Day, November 11, 2013 and begin their journey to see, share and learn more about connected health care, to help put them in the driver’s seat.

VA Blue Button is Keeping the Promise: VA Blue Button can generate and download an electronic file that contains Veterans’ available personal health and self-entered information from My HealtheVet. VA has significantly expanded the types of information are available to Veterans who have upgraded to a Premium My HealtheVet account.

With the June 2013 enhancements to Blue Button, Veteran patients now have more timely access to data, more options for self-reported information and improved data refresh options to keep their personal health record up-to-date and complete.

Sharing Veteran patients’ lab results and reports via Blue Button can help facilities meet the requirement to share test results and findings with patients within the new three-day hold period*. Enhancements also improve the ability to reassign and respond to Secure Messages and resolve issues related to authentication for Veteran patients. *Pathology Reports will still be delivered under a 14-day hold.

Enabling patients to have greater access to the information contained in their VA Electronic Health Record is an important step in engaging them to be active partners with their health care team.
