It’s a unique challenge: Protecting the electric grid from cyber vulnerabilities. The grid is now getting a cybersecurity boost.

The Energy Department has unveiled a new initiative that will develop cyber security risk management process guidelines for the electric sector.

The new guidelines will be joint effort between the Energy Department the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the North American Electric Reliability Corporation.

Traditional cyber security approaches for electric utilities are segmented, with different approaches for control systems and information systems. This has resulted in cybersecurity requirements that are overly restrictive in some cases, and not restrictive enough in others.
