Klopp discussed his priorities in modernizing SSA’s technology systems that include more than 60 million lines of COBOL. Klopp also discussed how SSA is taking advantage of cloud computing and agile development approaches.

GUEST BIOGRAPHY: 

Robert Klopp has been the Social Security Administration’s CIO and deputy commissioner for systems since August 2015. He has worked at SSA since January 2015 when he joined as the agency’s chief technology officer. Prior to joining the government, Klopp worked for both large and small software firms in Silicon Valley. One of those, Greenplum, for example, was acquired by EMC and Teradata. During his time at Greenplum, Klopp spent nearly two years based in Switzerland as the EMC/Greenplum CTO for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He also worked in the consulting services space for EDS, now part of HP, and for what is now KPMG, as well as in his own boutique consultancy. Klopp started his career out of college in the government arena with the State of California where he was a mainframe systems programmer.
