NTEU gives Clinton the stamp of approval

The National Treasury Employees Union is joining the largest federal employees union in endorsing Hillary Clinton for President.

“Throughout her career, Clinton has been a strong supporter of federal employees. I believe as president she will continue that support on issues from fair pay to protecting retirement benefits and workplace rights,” said NTEU National President Tony Reardon in a Jan. 20 statement. “Clinton recognizes the importance of the work done by federal employees and the need to recruit and retain a skilled federal workforce.”

NTEU represents 150,000 employees in 31 agencies and departments.

The largest federal employees union, the American Federation of Government Employees, endorsed Clinton late last year.

“Clinton shares AFGE’s vision for a strong and vibrant government workforce that has the necessary tools and support needed to deliver vital programs and services to the American public,” AFGE National President J. David Cox said in a statement announcing the decision

The NTEU endorsement comes as Clinton has been slipping in the polls against her Democratic rival Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vt.)

The American Postal Workers Union announced its support for Sanders in November. The postal union represents more than 230,000 members nationwide.

The Clinton campaign now has the support of 19 national unions and labor groups, which account for nearly 12 million people.

“The 2016 election will have a huge impact on NTEU members and all federal employees. This election will determine whether our country retains a talented and dedicated workforce with the necessary tools and resources to provide critical services to the American people,” Reardon said. “Clinton is a fighter who will ensure that federal employees and all working families get a fair shake and are treated with dignity and respect. I am proud to endorse her candidacy.”

NTEU endorsed Barack Obama in both the 2008 and 2012 election.
