RTCA’s NextGen Task Force is getting ready to release recommendations on modernizing the FAA’s Air Traffic Control System. The deadline for those recommendations is today. The report is expected to outline actionable recommendations through the 2018 time frame. Tomorrow morning, the Federal Drive will talk with RTCA President Margaret Jenny.

There could soon be direct postal service between the United States and Cuba. Talks – which have been suspended for decades – will resume in mid-September. Officials from the State Department and the Postal Service are expected to attend the talks in Havana. Direct postal service was suspended as a result of the animosity between the United States and Cuba that began in 1959. (Reuters)

Getting humans to Mars will require medical research on the International Space Station through at least the year 20-20. That’s according to the program’s lead scientist today, presenting a time frame five years beyond NASA’s current budget forecast. Extending the life of the $100-billion dollar station was a surprise finding of the presidential panel reviewing the U.S. human space program. The panel also said NASA’s $18 billion annual budget, about half of which is spent on human space projects, falls about $3 billion a year short for Constellation, the moon-and-beyond exploration initiative NASA plans after it retires the space shuttle and station programs.
