Reporters’ Roundup: CR’s impact on DoD, unions form coalition

  • Senior Defense Department officials Tuesday promised the military will meet its payroll if Congress passes a year-long continuing resolution. But Deputy Defense Secretary William Lynn also assured Senate lawmakers that programs and troop readiness would suffer greatly as a result of DoD needing to reshuffle funding. Federal News Radio’s Jason Miller has details from the Senate Appropriations Committee hearing about the impact a CR would have on DoD.
  • Federal employee labor unions are joining to form a coalition called America’s Workforce, to be launched in the next few weeks. Colleen Kelley is the president of The National Treasury Employees Union, which will help lead the effort. WFED’s Meg Beasley has the details.
  • The Department of Homeland Security already has real-time access to biometric data maintained in the FBI’s huge database of criminal records. Within the next year, it’ll be able to share similar data with the Defense Department. Jared Serbu has the full report.
