These are the top federal news stories of the day:

  • Government watchdogs are finding problems with the DoD plan to move more than 200,000 people to new personnel systems. GAO says the National Security Personnel System transition office isn’t supporting termination costs. They also find problems with documentation. NSPS is on its way out. More than 170,000 people so far have moved to new pay systems, most of them to the General Schedule.
  • The government is releasing its first ever inventory of greenhouse gas emissions. The White House says agencies put out more than 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide in 2010. That’s two and a half million tons less than the 2008 baseline. The inventory is part of the administration’s initiative to cut direct emissions by 28 percent over the next nine years.
  • Treasury, EPA and FDA aren’t making too many people happy online. They’re finding their websites at the bottom of the list, when it comes to customer satisfaction. The ForeSee results survey gives them anywhere between 57 and 66 points on a scale of 100. Good news for Social Security, though. Some of its pages score at the top of the list, earning 91 points.
  • Here’s your chance to recognize your colleagues for helping to green the government. The White House has opened nominations for the 2011 GreenGov Presidential Awards. The contest is open to civilian and military feds. Among this year’s categories: the Sustainability Hero Award for an individual fed and the Good Neighbor Award for a team that’s promoting green government at regional and local levels. You can nominate someone here.
