GAO weighs costs of DoD role in border patrols
GAO says the cost of moving more defense workers to the border will depend on how they are deployed.
The federal government wants to know if it will be worth it to post military personnel along the southwest land border.
The idea is that the patrols would fill the gaps while new Border Patrol agents are being hired, trained and deployed.
The Government Accountability Office says the cost of moving more defense workers to the border will depend on how they are deployed.
GAO says if Title 32 National Guard forces are used, the cost will depend on whether they are from in or out of state, how many are deployed, and for how long.
The workers also would not be allowed to make arrests or seizures.
