Pay, benefits changes part of 2013 DoD budget

The fiscal-year 2013 budget request gives and takes away when it comes to defense.

The official budget proposal calls for a 1.7 percent pay increase for uniformed personnel, but TRICARE would cost more for many.

Todd Harrison, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, is part of a team at CSBA that’s surveying military personnel about their benefits.

The group began the survey last month when the Defense Department first began unveiling details of a new defense strategy, including several changes to military retirement.


Harrison joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss the role that pay and benefits play in the official 2013 budget request.

Harrison previously wrote a commentary on the CSBA website titled “Defense Cuts Could Be Only the Beginning,” in which he called the automatic defense cuts known as sequestration a “glaring oversight” in the Pentagon’s budget planning.
