With FOIA — specifically the government’s management of Freedom of Information Act requests — in the headlines, a House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee took up the question of whether technology can improve the FOIA process and improve government transparency.

Miriam Nisbet, the director of the Office of Government Information Services, which operates as a FOIA resource for both agencies and the public, told the committee outdated technology and the particular challenges of managing electronic records continue to pose “obstacles for agencies.”

Manuel Cebrian — Assistant Research Scientist, UC-San Diego

The State department needs your help catching international jewel thieves. On March 31, the “Tag Challenge” begins, and the State Department is hoping participants can leverage social media to catch five imaginary jewel thieves scattered around the world. The five “suspects” will be out in public in five cities on that date, including Washington, D.C. and New York. In order to win the $5,000 prize, the teams, who will be previously supplied with the suspects’ mug shots, must snap a photograph of all five suspects.

Manuel Cebrian, an assistant research scientist at the University of California, San Diego, discusses how the team he is assembling plans to win the prize and how the challenge could possibly be used by law enforcement agencies.

The Defense Acquisition University’s special acquisition version of Wikipedia, Acquipedia, has been updated.

Jill Garcia, a knowledge project officer at DAU, discusses what article and materials are stored on the site and how members of the Defense Department’s acquisition workforce use the site.
