This week on “Fed Access”, Chris Geldart, director of the District of Columbia’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency, joins host Derrick Dortch to discuss how the organization plans for and responds to natural and man-made hazards in the national capital region.

Geldart provides background on the agency, including how it helps keep DC secure during major special security events, and its role in helping the city and region recover from terrorist attacks, civil disturbances, and natural disasters such as major flooding, hurricanes and snowstorms.

He also talks about the agency’s Alert DC which sends out alerts and text messages to citizens during an emergency to inform them on school closings, traffic problems, etc.  It also sends out amber alerts for missing children.

Geldart also discusses the agency’s new app that DC residents can install on their phones get preparedness plans during a major weather event and updates on evacuation routes.
