The Federal Government has racked up millions of dollars in unpaid water bills. Investigative Reporter Mark Segraves from our sister station WTOP has uncovered evidence the federal government isn’t paying special fees that water companies are charging. And in many cases, local water authorities are passing the tab on to consumers. At issue is a new fee that many local water authorities are charging in response to unfunded mandates by the Environmental Protection Agency. The District of Columbia’s Water and Sewer Authority began charging a fee to all of its customers last year. The federal government sees the fee as a tax and therefore something federal agencies are not required to pay.
