Budget cuts harm cybersecurity

As more states are finding themselves in the red, they’re furloughing workers and cutting back everything from road work to education. Now a new survey finds that’s impacting cybersecurity, too. The NASCIO/Deloitte survey finds that internal and external threats to personal and health information data are growing. CivSource reports that the study, called “State Governments at Risk: A Call to Secure Citizen Data and Inspire Public Trust,” finds 79-percent of state Chief Information Security Officers say their cybersecurity budgets are frozen or cut. The study suggests that states focus on governance and strategy to help CISO’s raise the level of cyber-awareness in their respective states.
