Panetta calls troop cuts in Europe ‘necessary’

The Pentagon is laying out its plans for significant cuts to U.S. forces in Europe.

Two Germany-based Army brigades will be brought home in 2014. By 2017, the number of U.S. service members in Europe will drop from about 80,000 now to 70,000.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, speaking in Munich, says the cuts are necessary to implement Dod’s new defense strategy while staying fiscally responsible.
