The Defense Logistics Agency doesn’t like what it sees happening to military gear in Arizona.
It regularly hands out about $500 million of surplus gear, like Humvees, helicopters, boots and binoculars, to law-enforcement agencies across the country.
But The Arizona Republic found a local sheriff had collected millions of dollars worth of equipment and passed it on. The sheriff had given some away to groups, including a private ambulance company. He also planned to sell some of it.
Now DLA is trying to make it clear that police cannot loan or sell items.
Arizona is not the biggest recipient of surplus Pentagon equipment.
That honor goes to Alabama, followed by Michigan, Texas Georgia and Tennessee.
