The Army was recently forced to shell out $50 million to settle a copyright infringement case with a software company, Apptricity. The company accused the Army of installing thousands of copies of Apptricity it had no licenses for.

The National Institutes of Health is organizing a consortium of 10 big drug companies. Researchers will collaborate on finding breakthrough treatments for diseases like Alzheimer’s, lupus and diabetes. This new arrangement is the biggest instance of a trend in the way NIH approaches big problems.

Helping the agency in these efforts is a non-profit called the NIH Foundation. David Wholley is the director of the Biomarkers Consortium at the Foundation.
