When hurricanes knocked out weather monitoring systems in the Caribbean last year, local officials had to rely on weather data from space to predict the path of approaching storms. The satellite technology forecasters use belongs to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Tim Schmit is a Satellite Research Meteorologist with NOAA and played a big role in developing that technology. His work made him a finalist in this year’s Service to America Medals, and he spoke with Federal News Radio’s Eric White on Federal Drive with Tom Temin about satellites and how they help when hurricanes approach.
