Many agencies can only roughly predict spikes in storage requirements. If you combine that with the amount of new data being produced from mobile devices, medical instruments, and even sensors it makes sense to look at new ways to provision storage.
Donald Poorman, solutions architect manager for Govplace and Jase McCarty, staff technical marketing architect for VMware joined Federal News Radio to discuss these issues and more on “Meeting Government’s Data Security Mission.”
McCarty addressed how a VMware vSAN can provide dynamically allocated storage for unexpected spikes. Not only does this make variable storage easier, but it reduces human errors and eliminates cross training that may be necessary with disparate hardware storage systems.
Security is top of mind for everyone inside and outside the federal government. In a development that may seem counter intuitive, today’s state-of-the-art VMware vSAN can actually provide encryption without the expected performance hit. This means that a system administrator can now provide scalable storage at reduced cost and include encryption without a reduction in accessing data.
When looking at the ecosystem of technology, VMware vSAN works very well with VDI. Poorman said that efficiently provisioning storage can ease the burden of deploying VDI. That’s because virtualized storage can assure systems are patched which reduces the risk of attack and, at the same time, reduces maintenance costs.
