Hello, I’m Kevin Koppenhaver, Senior Director for Cybersecurity programs with Belcan.

One of the questions that continually comes up from a potential customer is, “Should we start off by conducting penetration testing?” and as a general rule the answer to that question is no and the reason is that we find on a regular basis that most customers struggle to put in place or have in place a viable cybersecurity program.

To first address the programmatic and answer a question such as, “What is my configuration management plan?”, “Do I know what tools, what assets, what devices I have on my network?” And then from there, “Do I know what the vulnerabilities may be for my networks?” So we always recommend doing an inventory of what all of your equipment is and then based on that and based on the configurations that are in place, conduct an initial vulnerability assessment. Because once we determine where potential problems are, we’re in a much better position to then determine what our way ahead is.

Not all vulnerabilities are risk and that is the first determination. Once that has all been accomplished, then we can start looking at the risks that have been assessed and do a much more thorough deep dive and that’s really where the penetration testing comes in. So we like to sit down with our customers. Do an initial review. Determined goals. Determine objectives and determine their budget and then once we put that program in place we move forward appropriately. We would love to talk to you more.
