Cloud from the big company perspective

June 24, 2014 — When most listeners think of HP they may think of servers or, for the grizzled veterans, the classic HP laser printers. Very few think of cloud offerings from the well-respected Hewlett-Packard.

Today’s interview will open up your eyes to some exciting new developments with HP. In the studio is Scott Gaydos, chief technologist, Federal Healthcare, U.S. Public Sector, HP Enterprise Services.

During the interview, Gaydos gives an overview of the major cloud initiatives that were inaugurated by keynote speech by CEO Meg Whittman. In March, Whittman talked about a “New Style of IT.” Instead of HP making a piece of hardware to solve a problem, she wants the company to take a bigger look. She wants HP to focus on solving the inherent problems of managing large data sets, to meet mission critical workloads more effectively.

To this end, Gaydos gave a tremendous description of infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, and software as a service. From there, he outlined where HP would fit in a large organization’s desire to handle large data sets under the strictures of federal security.

Gaydos describes some of the new server offerings—for the first time, the hardware is configured to be optimized to handle tasks like CPU usage or web hosting transfers. The managed private cloud offering from HP runs under the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) moderate impact level, FISMA high, as well as HIPAA and the DISA ECSB impact Level-5.
