Primo mezcal for Cinco de Mayo

We meet the “Indiana Jones” of Mexico’s smoky alternative to tequila and get re-acquainted with several iterations of Mexican cuisine.

Hosted by David and Nycci Nellis.

Cinco de Mayo is coming, and we’re getting in the spirit(s). On the show today:
• Mexico in a Bottle mezcal tasting event organizer Susan Coss , accompanied by
 Joahna Hernandez of Manos de Maiz, bringing back the real flavors of corn to D.C.,
 Erick Rodriguez, from Alma Mezcalera, known to some, we understand, as the “Indiana Jones” of mezcal, and Christian Irabien, until recently the executive chef and culinary program director for the La Cocina VA Project and now preparing to open Amparo Fondita, a modern Mexican restaurant in Mount Pleasant.
• And … speaking of Mexican cuisine — you know him from his awesome serbian cuisine restaurant, Ambar – Ivan Iricanin is heading south of the U.S. border to open not one, but two restaurants in one with a definite Mexican flavor, Tacos, Tortas and Tequila and Buena Vida. He has brought his chef de cuisine, Graham Bartlett;
• Erica Meier is the executive director of Compassion Over Killing (COK), a national non-profit animal protection organization exposing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting veg-friendly eating as a way to build a kinder world;
• Finally, we introduce you to Supra, a new Georgian cuisine restaurant (that’s Georgian as in Tbilisi, not the ATL!). Jonathan Nelms and Jacob Weinstein are in with tastes and talk of Supra and some great Georgian wines.
