Symantec’s Veritas Storage Foundation storage software was the cause of a shutdown of the Armed Forces Health Longitudinal Technology Application clinical data repository as identified by the Military Health System.

About 9.7 million electronic records for active-duty and retired military personnel and their families are stored on AHLTA.

NextGov reports that DISA — which manages the system and repository — attempted a necessary upgrade to the software over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. The agency ran into problems and eventually had to take the system down to address the issues. Although DISA also maintains a backup repository, during the outage, it was not implemented and users were switched to local mode instead. AHLTA will run an older version of the software until Symantec produces a patch.
