‘Father of the Internet’ Vint Cerf discusses cloud, standards

May 4, 2010 — Vint Cerf is one of the few people around during the formative years of the Internet.

He sees many parallels between today and 1973. Back then, standards for networking computing were just being introduced. He, along with Bob Khan, were instrumental in establishing protocols that are still in use.

Here in 2010 the federal community is trying to set up standards for cloud computing.

The OMB is pushing federal agencies to the cloud, but agencies must understand the technical and legal ramifications of this move.

A typical agency may not have budget to assess their current applications and to see which ones are good “candidates” for cloud computing.

Vint speaks about differentiating between a public, private, and community cloud.

Agreeing on standards is a function of the federal government and commercial organizations.
