Being a federal manager remote from Washington has its challenges. Those challenges are compounded when you are a contractor manager assigned to a remote office.

Thom Mason, the director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, works for a consortium hired by the Energy Department to manage the lab.
