This week on “Off the Shelf”, Jack Midgley, executive officer, Defense and Social Infrastructure, Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting Co. Ltd., briefs Deloitte’s February 24th report: Asia-Pacific Defense Outlook 2016/Defense in Four Domains.

The Deloitte report highlights key defense budget, acquisition and R&D trends across the Asia-Pacific region. The report examines key strategic and operational environments through the lens of four domains that are driving current defense policy across the region:  (1)Conventional armed conflict; (2) Terrorism; (3) Migration; and (4) Cyber.

One of the authors of the report, Midgley also shares his thoughts on what current trends in these domains mean for the nations of the Asia-Pacific region. Just one highlighted trend — more than 50 % of global container mover through the Asia-Pacific — what does this mean for regional defense spending?

Significantly, Midgley also provides his take on what it means for the United States economic diplomatic and defense policy amid the shifting focus towards Asia.
