Federal employees in the Washington, D.C. metro area should arrive for work two hours later than normal to avoid the brunt of a wintery mix of snow, ice and rain working its way through the region.

The Office of Personnel Management announced its decision this morning to delay the opening of federal offices as well as let employees take unscheduled leave or unscheduled telework.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for much of the region from 3 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday. Federal News Radio’s sister station, WTOP, reports a combination of sleet, snow, freezing rain and rain was possible in and around D.C. starting around 2 a.m. and lasting through the morning commute. Regions south and east of D.C. will see mostly rain. Drivers should prepare for slippery roads and reduced visibility that may make travel conditions difficult during the morning commute.

Several area school systems and local governments are opening under a delay as well.

OPM encouraged federal employees in the Washington metro area to download the OPM Alert mobile app, which lists the current and active operating status and sends push notifications to inform users of any changes.

Feds can also find the government operating status for the Washington area on OPM’s website or social media channels.
