Sea-Air-Space is now the largest maritime exposition in the U.S. and continues as an invaluable extension of the Navy League’s mission of maritime policy education and sea service support. The Sea-Air-Space Exposition will continue to support the mission of the Navy League and lead the way as “THE” Exposition to attend each year to display the most current information and technology relevant to maritime policy.
Federal News Radio was on-site at the 2018 show.
The Navy League has deep roots in communities across the nation. The League’s main goals are to enhance the morale of active duty members, to spread knowledge of the Navy’s mission and importance and to supporting young people interested in sea services. During the League’s Sea Air Space conference, Federal Drive with Tom Temin got an update from League National President Alan Kaplan.
The technologies tying together the Navy’s many systems, from those deep in the oceans to those in space, come from the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR). At this week’s Sea Air Space conference put on by the Navy League, Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke with SPAWAR Commander Rear Adm. Boris Becker. Becker said whether SPAWAR is primarily an acquisition organization or an engineering one.
No military airplane, land convoy or ship goes very far without supplies. For the Navy, that is where the 22,000-strong Naval Supply Systems Command, or NAVSUP, comes in. For an update on supply people, systems and strategies, Federal Drive with Tom Temin spoke with Michael Madden, vice commander of NAVSUP, at the Sea Air Land conference this week.
When Federal News Radio last spoke to Martime Administrator Rear Adm. Mark Buzby, he had just taken over the position. His first order of business was dealing with a detailed report on MARAD prepared by the National Academy of Public Administration. This week he gave an update on MARAD at the Navy League’s Sea Air Space conference, where he also spoke with Federal Drive with Tom Temin.
How do you switch from being a museum curator to executive director of a support organization for the nation’s largest armed service? In Jim Bruns’ case, it was not such a big leap because he was already head of the Naval History and Heritage Commands’ Museums Operations Division. The Navy League’s national executive director spoke with Federal Drive with Tom Temin at the Sea Air Space conference April 9.
It has taken a long time for the idea of joint warfare to really take hold. Now cooperation among the armed services is more the norm than the exception. Next frontier is what the military refers to as cross-domain integration. That is an area of interest to Navy Rear Adm. Ron Boxall, director of surface warfare, who spoke with Federal Drive with Tom Temin at the Sea Air Space conference April 9.
The Navy wants to bring more small businesses into the fold to help foster research and innovation. The Small Business Innovation Research program assists businesses by streamlining the process to develop, test and implement technologies for use by warfighters. Robert Smith, director of SBIR, discussed this on the Federal Drive with Tom Temin at the 2018 Sea Air Space Expo in National Harbor, Maryland.
