Making a healthy case for condiments

Kristi King,

WASHINGTON – Go ahead, pile those toppings on your summer hot dogs: Condiments can have hidden health benefits.

Sauerkraut helps digestion. It’s loaded with probiotic bacteria that help ease symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome.

Horseradish helps your liver detoxify carcinogens. Cinnamon stabilizes blood sugar. Rosemary cuts down on carcinogens caused when cooking some foods.

A list of condiment cures from Prevention Magazine also includes ketchup. Ketchup with the darkest color has the most lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant. Organic ketchup has the highest levels of vitamins A, C and E.

A compound in black pepper might slow down stem cells that grow cancer tumors, according to new research at the University of Michigan.

Also feel free to load tater tots or breakfast eggs with hot sauce. Capsaicin found in hot peppers helps curb appetite.
