By February 28, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will demonstrate the nationwide health information network with MedVirginia,a regional health information exchange near Richmond.

SSA will obtain patient records electronically to help speed up social security claims processing. This is the first real implementation of the Nationwide Health Information Network and if successful, could lay the ground work for an expansion of the use of electronic health records by federal agencies.
