You’ve heard talk of the smart grid, the hyper-intelligent way of moving energy around.

The goal is for energy use to be much more efficient. But it also means that it could be more susceptible to cyber-attack. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has been focusing on that issue.

The Cyber Security Working Group (CSWG) of the NIST’s Smart Grid Interoperability Panel has just released version one of the smart grid cyber-security standards, and the guide is over 500 pages. Marianne Swanson is a Senior Advisor for Information System Security at the NIST. She says just like any new technology there will be significant vulnerabilities.
