The Department Health and Human Services is seeking Facebook apps to help in emergency preparedness.

The “Lifeline Facebook App Challenge” is asking for submissions that provide “actionable steps” for Facebook users in case of a disaster, according to today’s Federal Register.

Specifically, the submissions should allow a user to invite three Facebook friends to become “lifelines,” who will act as support during an emergency.

HHS is encouraging entrants to take advantage of Facebook’s networking and geo-locating abilities.

The first-place prize is $10,000, second is $5,000 and third is $1,000. The submission period is Aug. 15 to Sept. 15.
