Midday getaway: how R & R boosts productivity

Recharj is a place to go for rest and relaxation in the middle of a busy work life.

Schedules and deadlines for Type A personalities in the D.C. region are sometimes overwhelming. All too often, to squeeze in meetings, networking events and some fun, employees cut back on their sleep to be able to make it all happen.

Meet the man who preaches the dangers of stress and sleep deprivation.

“I think a lot of our culture has gotten the fact that physical health is critically important. Exercise is important. I think we’re just starting to get around around to the fact now of how critical sleep is to our overall health and wellness,” says Daniel Turissini, founder of Recharj, a meditation studio just steps from the White House that offers space for power naps.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a third of adults don’t get enough sleep, noting that most adults need at least seven hours per night.

“A lot of Fortune 500 companies are focused on engagement and they’re focused on burnout,” Turissini told What’s Working in Washington. “And burnout is insanely expensive. I mean it’s just silly for companies that have to deal with turnover: you have to rehire, to have to retrain.”

Finding a driven, focused, dedicated employee is tough to do, and Turissini says that his devotion to rest and meditation makes sure that a company’s investment in a great employee is protected. He says scheduling some rest in the middle of a work day helps guarantee that the second half of a day is productive.
