Pamela Sorensen, an experienced founder, entrepreneur, and blogger has mastered the career pivot.

“My background is primarily in business development, and sales, in a variety of different industries… and about 2006 I decided to start a blog,” said Sorensen, creator of Pamela’s Punch.

After running the popular blog for a decade, Sorensen turned back to companies in the D.C. area to find where her career should go next, with the specific hope in mind to “make an impact in this world,” she said.

Last year, Sorensen joined BetterWorld Telecom. “I got back into sales, and I got back into working for an entrepreneurial-type company,” she said.

Sorensen said that the process of actually going through with pivoting her entire career came from “being really true to myself, and knowing who I really am,” despite what other people might have done or said in the same field.

“It was just really about saying, okay, this is good for me. This is good for my future. This is where I need to be,” she told What’s Working in Washington.

Also important is knowing that pivoting isn’t just from field to field, but could be from working for a company to self-employment, and vice versa. “I think what I’ve told [people] is, for one, when you know, you know,” Sorensen said. “It’s kind of like when you break up with somebody.”

“So when you start to feel that, alright, I’m a little uncomfortable… it’s beginning to be a pain prick that keeps happening over and over… you’re going to have to be very self aware and say, okay, now’s the time,” she said.
