Services expanding removal of SSNs on documents

The Defense Department is expanding the removal of Social Security numbers from service member documents.

Erin Conaton, the Under Secretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness, issued a memo last week detailing five specific steps services must take to remove or mask the use of social security numbers.

The memo states services should not use SSNs on spreadsheets, hard copy lists, electronic reports, or collect them in surveys. The military services and agencies also should review forms and systems to reduce SSN use.

DoD began this effort in April 2011, when it stopped printing SSNs on its secure identity cards.
