The Pentagon will deal with budget challenges in 2013, but those aren’t the only issues DoD planners will face.

Rudy deLeon, senior vice president for National Security & International Policy at the Center for American Progress and a former deputy secretary of defense, says the U.S. relationship with China will be a high-profile challenge for the Defense Department in 2013.

Rudy deLeon’s Top 3 for 2013
  1. Elections and Party Congress have paved the way for new and continued dialogue between the United States and China. There are risks and rewards in the national security area.
  2. The budget debate and the Pentagon. Everyone knows that cuts are coming. In 1993, the Department knew the level of cuts early and could plan accordingly. The current situation is a back and forth with a Congress that seems unable to make permanent decisions. What are the implications?
  3. The Middle East. The peace process, Egypt, Iran and Syria. The pathway forward will be very challenging.
