Navy awards $400 million new vessel contract

The Navy Sea Systems Command has awarded a $400 million contract for two new Joint High Speed Vessels.

The Navy Sea Systems Command has awarded a $400 million contract for two new Joint High Speed Vessels. Austal USA received that award. It will do about half the work in Mobile, Ala. The Joint High Speed Vessels program merges two earlier programs, one at the Army and one at the Navy. The ships can carry 600 tons of gear more than 1,000 miles going 35 knots. They have room for Abrams battle tanks, and they sport helicopter pads. They can run close enough to the beach to let vehicles drive off onto land.
