The Navy is testing whether alternative fuels can keep its fleet moving on a large scale.

A demonstration project started Tuesday during the Rim of the Pacific exercises. The Navy used non-petroleum-based fuels in helicopters and jets that take off from an air craft carrier. A cruiser and two destroyers also ran on alternative fuel. Those vehicles were replenished while underway using the alternatives.

Secretary Ray Mabus said the Great Green Fleet demonstration tested something the Navy cannot afford not to do. He said each dollar fossil fuel prices rise costs the Navy $30 million.
