Candid viewpoints on the Defense Department’s budget future from uniformed personnel are often hard to come by.

Lt. Gen. David Barno, a senior adviser and senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a retired Army general, was the first commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan.

Barno testified before the Senate Budget Committee last week about the Pentagon’s 2013 budget request.

“The current debate that has seized our nation and our political leadership has to do not only with putting Americans back to work, about reducing exploding debt and annual deficits, about entitlements and taxes, about living, as a nation, within our means — but it also fundamentally has to do with where the United States is going to fit in this new world,” Barno said.

Barno joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss his Senate testimony and his perspective on the defense budget.
